Roshen Chanaka laid to rest
The funeral of Ratnasekera Peragonsal Arachchige Roshen Chanaka Ratnasekera (21), who succumbed to his injuries after being shot by the police during a workers’ protest in Katunayake last week, took place on Saturday with the participation of a large crowd of mourners. He was buried at the St. Augustine’s Roman Catholic Church cemetery at 4.30.
Roshen was shot while workers were protesting against the proposed Private Sector Pensions Scheme (PSPS).
Roshen had been employed as a machine operator for four months at SSXL Global for a salary of Rs. 7,000 a month.
His elder brother Madushan, a medical student, told The Island that his younger brother Rohsen had obtain leave on that fateful day (May 30) when he was shot by the police, to take part in the protest at issue.
Family members of the victim said that young Roshen had studied at Parents of Roshen Chanaka told The Island that they wanted justice done. A grief stricken mother could not express herself in her conversation with us. The victim’s father Stanley Quintus said nothing not even millions of rupees could bring his son back to life.
Unions demand govt. pay Rs. 5 mn as compensation
The Free Trade Zones and General Services Employees Union (FTZGSEU) Secretary Anton Markus told The Island that his union and the Joint Trade Union alliance (JTUA) wanted the government to pay Rs. 5 million by way of compensation Roshen Chanaka’s family.
Markus said he did not know whether the protesting workers would get their wages as the BOI had closed the zone for two days. At least 15 EPZ workers were still receiving treatment following the police shooting, he said.
