President orders Rs. 1 mn be paid to dead FTZ employee’s family

President Mahinda Rajapaksa has directed BoI Chairman Jayampathy Bandaranayake to pay one million rupees to the family of the Katunayake Export Processing Zone employee who died on Wednesday (1) due to gunshot injuries sustained when Police opened fire on a group of workers protesting against the Private Sector Pensions Scheme at Katunayake on Monday (May 30).
The dead FTZ employee was 21-year-old Roshen Chanaka, a resident of Galloluwa in Minuwangoda.
He received gunshot injuries on his right leg which was amputated after he was admitted to the Ragama Hospital. He suffered from gunshot injuries to his kidney’s, too, and was on a life support machine in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) of the Ragama Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries at about 6.30 p.m. on Wednesday (1).
His funeral is scheduled to place today (Saturday) at the Minuwangoda Roman Catholic cemetery at 3.00 p.m.
About 40 to 50 employees were warded at the Seeduwa, Negombo and Ragama Hospitals, while 15 police personnel including a DIG and two ASPs, too, received injuries.
