Police powers to PCs will cause security concerns: Karuna
The devolution of police powers to provincial councils is not practicable and would cause further security concerns for the government, SLFP Vice President and Deputy Minister of Resettlement, Vinayagamurthi Muralitharan alias Karuna Amman said.
Muralitharan pointed out that such a mechanism could be implemented in countries like India, which has a large geographical area, where devolution of powers to the provincial governments were needed.
He also said that if police powers were devolved, maintaining law and order and rule of law in the contexts such as the Eastern Provincial Council would be an absolute impossibility.
Muralitharan also welcomed talks between the government and the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) to find solutions for the immediate needs of the war-affected people and also to the longstanding ethnic question.
“It does not matter whether a permanent solution is reached through these dialogues. The main issue is that the TNA has come forward to talk to the government. This could be used as a platform for the TNA to express their concerns,” he said.
