Martial arts champion shot dead
Unidentified gunmen on Saturday night have shot dead a Taekwando and Thai Boxing medalist of international repute while he was cycling to a barber salon to have a hair cut at the Katunayake junction.
The deceased was Suminda Nadeeshan Liyanage (21) of Katunayake.
His killers had arrived on a motorcycle and fired at his head with a T 56 assault rifle and fled.
Liyanage was the winner of the gold medal in the fly weight class at the 20003 Taekwando championship and went on to win the sliver medal in the same class at the Taekwando World Championship held in Malaysia in 2005.He is an old boy of Katunayake Roman Catholic Junior School and Katunayake Samara Maha Vidyalaya.His killers are still at large.
