Default Kokavil to make Lanka, Asian Information Network hub

The Kokavil Multifunctional Transmission Centre and Tower which was commissioned by President Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday, is an important milestone on the road to making Sri Lanka an Asian Information Network hub.

This is also a very significant construction which reminds the entire nation of the gallantry of our Security Forces since 53 Army personnel led by Captain Saliya Upul Aladeniya made the supreme sacrifice in 1990 in defence of the tower facing terrorist fire.

Around Rs 330 million has been spent for the construction of the 174 metre tall tower which is situated at Kokavil, the centre point between Jaffna and Vavuniya.

With the arrival of President Mahinda Rajapaksa a guard of honour was accorded by the Army.

Thereafter, President Mahinda Rajapaksa paid a floral tribute at the monument erected in memory of Captain Aladeniya close to the tower.

Later on President Mahinda Rajapaksa was welcomed by two children clad in Tamil traditional attire. Thereafter President Rajapaksa commissioned the tower.

After the President was accompanied to the ceremony hall Mass Media and Information Minister Keheliya Rambukwella made the welcome speech.

After the speech by Information and Telecommunication Minister Ranjith Siyambalapitiya, Traditional Industries and Small Enterprise Development Minister Douglas Devananda delivered his speech.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa got a standing ovation when he began delivering his speech.

The President also spoke in Tamil to the delight of the large crowd.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa promised to uplift the lives of the Northern people. The President said many War Heroes sacrificed their lives to bring peace to the land, so that the children of the North could go to school and live a normal happy life.

The ceremony ended with the singing of the National Anthem.

Secretary to the President Lalith Weeratunga, Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, Chief of Defence Staff Air Vice Marshal Roshan Goonetileke, Army Commander Lt Gen Jagath Jayasuriya, Air Force Commander Air Marshal Harsha Abeygunawardene, Acting IGP NK Ilangakoon, Northern Governor Gen GA Chandrasiri and North Central Governor Karunaratne Divulgane were also present.
