Default FTZ worker’s funeral peaceful

The funeral of Roshen Chanaka, the Free Trade Zone worker who died after being injured in last Monday’s clashes, was held in Galloluwa, off Minuwangoda, yesterday.

Thousands of people attended Chanaka’s funeral under the watchful eye of the military and no Police were to be seen.
Chanaka’s body was moved to the St. Augustine’s church around 8 a.m. on Saturday morning for public viewing and religious rites, and was buried at the church cemetery around 4.30 p.m.

A court order prevented any speeches being made during funeral proceedings, but a few politicians from ruling and opposition parties attended the funeral.
Chanaka succumbed to his injuries last Wednesday at the Ragama hospital while being treated for gun shot injuries sustained when police and protesters clashed at the Katunayake free trade zone.
