360,000 pilgrims for Madhu festival
All arrangements have been finalised for about 360,000 pilgrims to participate in the annual Madhu Church festival which would commence with the hoisting of the flag on Thursday (June 23) said Vicar-General of the Diocese of Mannar Rev A.Victor Sosai yesterday (20).
"No security restrictions had been placed by the Police or the security forces this year and all pilgrims are free to visit Madhu this year", he said.
The Vicar-General said that with the return of the peaceful environment pilgrims from all parts of the country were expected to participate in this year’s annual festivities which will centre on "Spiritual Revival".
The administrator of Our Lady of Madhu Church Rev Father S.Emilanus Pillai would hoist the flag on Thursday at the auspicious time of 6.30 pm
The novenas would be held for eight days daily following the hoisting of the flag with the Eucharistic Day being celebrated on the ninth day on Friday (July 1) followed by the Eucharistic procession . within the Church premises .
The festivities would come to a conclusion with the festival mass being officiated by the Bishop of Mannar Rt.Rev Rayappu Joseph in Tamil ,Sinhalese and Latin languages on July 2 at 6.30 a.m.
The District Secretary for Mannar Nagalingam Vethanayakam convened a meeting last week with the participation of Church officials, heads of government depts, Police and Security Forces to finalize food, accommodation, drinking water, sanitary, transport, lighting and security arrangements for the convenience of the pilgrims.
The Vicar General said that as accommodation around the Church was limited pilgrims are kindly advised to bring their own tents or make alternate arrangements .
The Mannar Cooperative Society and several private traders have agreed to open food kiosks around the church for the convenience of the pilgrims.
