Incident-

Almost 98 guests (out of 100 participants) were suffered from worst food poisoning, a few hours after the lunch served by Hotel Kandyan Arts Residency during wedding ceremony and some were treated in hospitals and others were sought outdoor private medical treatment. The bride and groom were also falling ill causing vomiting and diarrhea in 8 stops throughout their going away journey from Kandy to Colombo. This also led to cancel their honeymoon hotel bookings for subsequent five days, causing not only loss of money but ruining their honeymoon. Just imagine the inconvenience caused to them.

This case was immediately reported to the hotel management but there was no response. The following day and the next day also reported the same but the Management did not respond, at least the Manager didn’t come to the phone. Finally we sent a strong letter stating that we do not hesitate to take legal actions against the hotel. Then the Manager ( gmkandyanart@gmail.com ) was immediately called back and said they will compensate the damages caused to us.

Finally about two months later (on 11th March 2011) the Manager called and said “we are not ready to compensate or do anything, you do whatever you can”. This is the situation in Sri Lankan hotel industry. I will raise this issue to wherever possible for justice on behalf of Sri Lankan nations.

My mother is 74 years old and she luckily escaped from near death after five days of treatments. My aunt, Dr.Saman Meetiyagoda’s mother-in-law and lawyer Janaka Thumbowila’s mother was seriously ill due to failing to treat her diabetes (she was on insulin injections) due to weakness caused by diarrhea. The groom’s parties had come from Passara, Badulla and just imagine how they suffered on the way back home (6 hours journey) after the ceremony.

Though the damage cannot be estimated or substitute by money, we were already choosen one needy family who was disabled in northern battle through Colonel Darshana Wijesekara to pay the compensation in front of the hotel staff if paid by the hotel Management.



My request-

I kindly request you to circulate this mail to all our friends in University staff, all CEB Engineers, all RDA Engineers, all medical officers, all bank officers, all legal officers, all military officers, all teachers, all department heads, all hotels in Sri Lanka, all pharmacies, Municipal, Tourist board as well as all your friends and relatives. (Since I am in Dubai I can’t find some addresses)

Also I kindly request all of you to avoid making reservation or attending any functions in this particular hotel/reception hall if you trust me.
